We recently joined Sean Batten on the Batten House Podcast, sharing our journey into real estate development, and here is what we chatted about:

When we started our real estate development company back in 2012, we had no idea just how rewarding—and challenging—the journey would become. Transitioning from our previous careers—aerospace engineer and an anesthesiologist in Russia—we dove into real estate initially to supplement our single income and support our suddenly large family. Little did we know, this side project would blossom into a thriving, purpose-driven business.

What started out as student rentals evolved naturally as we discovered an increasing demand from young professionals, new immigrants, mature couples, and even empty nesters.

Early on, we recognized an intriguing trend: the number of one and two-person households in Canada had doubled between 1960 and 2011. This realization sparked our focus on developing micro suites—small, luxurious apartments perfectly tailored to the lifestyles of singles and couples. 

To do so, we strategically acquire properties in desirable Ottawa locations and redevelop them to their fullest potential. We love our job, but it certainly comes with its fair share of obstacles. Navigating complex city regulations, community feedback, lengthy permitting, and financing processes often tests our patience and adaptability.

Yet, despite these challenges, our passion for creating sustainable, beautiful, and functional homes keeps us motivated. Managing multiple projects simultaneously ensures continuous progress and growth, something we’ve learned is essential in our line of work.

Outside our bustling business life, we cherish travelling and sailing with our sons—precious moments of family bonding and rejuvenation.

We’re constantly reminded of the importance of adaptability and determination. Every project has taught us valuable lessons, but above all, it has shown us that the rewards far outweigh the hurdles.
